30 idioms thường được dùng trong IELTS Speaking

Bài viết này, SOL sẽ giới thiệu với các bạn 30 idioms rất hay được dùng trong IELTS Speaking, kèm ví dụ minh họa nhé. 

• hit the books: học tập chăm chỉ

Ví dụ: He refused my invitation for a picnic because he had to hit the books.

• hit the sack: chuẩn bị đi ngủ

Ví dụ: She was so tired that she hit the sack. 　　

• twist someone’s arm: thuyết phục ai đó làm điều gì đó

Ví dụ: I was not going hiking but my friends twisted my arm and got me to go.

• stab someone in the back: làm tổn thương ai đó, phản bội lòng tin của họ (đâm sau lưng)

Ví dụ: My sister stabbed me in the back by telling my parents I snuck out of the house.

• sit tight: kiên nhẫn chờ đợi

Ví dụ: We were waiting in line for the gates to open when someone came out and told us to sit tight, because it wouldn't be much longer before we could go in.

• pitch in: Làm việc cùng nhau để đạt được mục tiêu/ làm việc gì đó có ý nghĩa theo nhóm

Ví dụ: We all pitched in 10 dollars to buy her a present.

• face the music: chấp nhận thực tế và gánh chịu hậu quả

Ví dụ: The boy was caught cheating in an examination and had to face the music.

• ring a bell: quen thuộc, gợi nhớ

Ví dụ: I could not remember her name but her face ringed a bell.

• blow off steam: trút bỏ những cảm xúc bị đè nén

Ví dụ: If Anna gets mad, she will usually go on a drive to blow off steam.

• cut to the chase: nói thẳng, đi thẳng vào vấn đề

Ví dụ: They don’t have ample time so they are going to cut to the chase.

• up in the air: không chắc chắn, chưa dứt khoát

Ví dụ:  Plans for the picnic were still up in the air since we couldn’t decide where to go.

• under the weather: cảm thấy khó chịu/ tâm trạng tồi tệ

Ví dụ: She has been under the weather for some days, so she decided to go to the hospital.

• born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth: sinh ra trong một gia đình giàu có, quyền lực

Ví dụ: Annie is born with a silver spoon in her mouth. she doesn’t need to worry about anything.

• to go from rags to riches: từ nghèo khó trở nên giàu có/ đổi đời

Ví dụ: Flora went from rags to riches. She was once living in a two-room apartment but now owns a mansion.

• to give a run for one’s money: tạo nên một thách thức lớn cho đối thủ/ cố gắng hết mình để thi đấu

Ví dụ: John really gave me a run for my money in the match. He almost beat me!

• to pony up: thanh toán hóa đơn, trả tiền/ giải quyết 1 khoản nợ

Ví dụ: Each guest had to pony up $40 for the meal.

• beat one's brains: vắt óc suy nghĩ

Ví dụ: She beat her brains to solve the problem.

• to go dutch: chia đều chi phí/ chia đều tiền ăn

Ví dụ: Usually we go Dutch when we eat out but that time Annie paid the bill since it was her birthday.

• Midas touch: có khả năng kiếm tiền ở bất cứ việc gì đảm nhận, có thể kiếm tiền 1 cách dễ dàng

Ví dụ: My cousin really has the Midas touch. Every venture he starts becomes very successful.

• as genuine as a three-dollar bill: hàng giả

Ví dụ: Those leather shoes that they sold on the street were as genuine as a three-dollar bill.

• rule of thumb: nguyên tắc bất thành văn

Ví dụ: As a rule of thumb, you should always wash your plate after dinner.

• find one’s feet: thích nghi với môi trường mới

Ví dụ: I just joined the organization recently so I'm still finding my feet.

• a piece of cake: một việc dễ dàng

Ví dụ: John expected the test match to be difficult but it was a piece of cake.

• spice things up: làm cho hấp dẫn, thú vị hơn

Ví dụ: Instead of just buying my sister a dress, my father spiced things up by taking her out for dinner.

• cool as a cucumber: hết sức bình tĩnh, đặc biệt khi chịu nhiều áp lực

Ví dụ: Hard things do not bother him much, he is cool as a cucumber.

• on the spur of the moment: quyết định đột ngột, tức thời

Ví dụ: On the spur of the moment, they decided to hold a fancy dress party.

• throw in the towel: đầu hàng, bỏ cuộc, chấp nhận bị đánh bại

Ví dụ: He vowed he would never throw in the towel.

• throw/shed/cast light on sth: làm sáng tỏ, làm cho dễ hiểu hơn

Ví dụ: Recent research has thrown new light on the causes of the disease.

• free as a bird: tự do, tự tại

Ví dụ: My sister is about to have a baby. Her days of being free as a bird are over.

• make a hit: đạt được thành công hoặc tạo được sự nổi tiếng

Ví dụ: The comedy film made a hit.
