Some people think that if a country is already rich, any addition in economic wealth does not make its citizens happier. Do you agree or disagree?
Some individuals believe that an increase in a nation's economic wealth would not increase the happiness of its citizens, regardless of the country's current level of prosperity. In this article, I will discuss why I completely support this view.
Specifically, as economies grow, the demand for energy and resources increases, often leading to an increase in pollution, deforestation, and other environmental issues. These environmental issues can have negative consequences on the well-being of citizens, such as the degradation of air and water quality, negative health impacts, and loss of access to natural resources that sustain their livelihoods. For example, pollution from industrial activities and transportation can lead to respiratory illnesses and other health problems, while deforestation and soil degradation can lead to reduced agricultural productivity and food insecurity. Such reduction in the quality of life and the limited access to fundamental necessities can negatively impact the overall level of happiness and well-being of the populace.
Granted, one might argue that economic growth can lead to increased access to resources, including but not limited to healthcare, education, and social services. This is predicated on the assumption that with increased wealth, a country can allocate more resources towards improving public services, expanding infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of life of its citizens. However, this line of reasoning is not feasible because it fails to factor in the fact that these benefits are not always equally distributed among the population. In many cases, economic growth can exacerbate existing inequalities, with the benefits accruing primarily to the already wealthy while the poor continue to struggle. In developing countries, for example, industries that rely on low-wage labor may drive economic growth while exploiting workers, resulting in increased income inequality and social unrest.
In conclusion, it is my belief that a country's level of economic prosperity does not necessarily contribute to the well-being and happiness of its citizens, even in cases where the country is already prosperous.
