    Cambridge IELTS 18 Speaking - Test 1 - Part 2

Describe some food or drink that you learned to prepare.

    You should say:

    • what food or drink you learned to prepare
    • when and where you learned to prepare this
    • how you learned to prepare this

Sample answer by The SOL IELTS:

The food or drink that I learned to prepare is homemade pizza. I developed an interest in cooking and wanted to try making my own pizza from scratch.

I remember learning to prepare this delicious dish about a year ago during the summer break. I chose this time as I had more free time to dedicate to the process. I decided to learn at home in my own kitchen.

To learn how to prepare homemade pizza, I relied on a combination of online resources, cooking blogs, and video tutorials. I watched several instructional videos on YouTube that guided me through the entire process, from making the dough to choosing the toppings. I also referred to various cooking blogs that provided tips and tricks for achieving the perfect crust and flavor combinations.

Initially, I focused on understanding the basics, such as mixing the ingredients for the dough and letting it rise properly. I practiced rolling out the dough and shaping it into a perfect circle. I experimented with different toppings like fresh vegetables, different types of cheeses, and various sauces. Gradually, I learned to achieve the right balance of flavors and textures.

I found that the key to making a great homemade pizza is in the preparation and the baking process. I learned about preheating the oven, using the right temperature, and positioning the pizza properly on the baking stone or tray. I also discovered the importance of timing to ensure that the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted to perfection.

I think young people should have the opportunity to learn to cook both at home and at school. Home cooking provides a valuable learning environment where children can bond with their family, inherit traditional recipes, and develop a sense of cultural identity through food.
