    IELTS Speaking part 2

    1. Đề bài

Describe a time when you felt that telling the truth was important

    You should say:

    • When and where it happened
    • Who was involved
    • What the situation was
    • Why telling the truth was important and how you felt about it

    2. Sample answer 1

I’m going to talk about a time when I realized how important it was to tell the truth, even though it was difficult. This happened when I was in Grade 10, during a group project in my literature class.

I was working on the project with three classmates, and we had to prepare a presentation on a famous Vietnamese novel. Each of us had specific tasks, and I was in charge of designing the slides. However, I procrastinated and didn’t finish them on time. Instead of admitting it, I pretended that my laptop had suddenly crashed, which caused a delay in submitting our work.

At first, my group members believed me and were understanding, but I felt extremely guilty. After a few hours, I decided to be honest and confessed that it was my fault. I apologized and promised to finish the slides overnight. To my surprise, they appreciated my honesty and even helped me complete the work.

This experience taught me that telling the truth is always the right thing to do, even when it’s uncomfortable. If I had continued lying, my guilt would have only grown, and I could have lost my friends’ trust. I felt relieved after admitting my mistake, and from that day on, I became much more responsible with my work.

    3. Sample answer 2

A situation that made me realize the importance of honesty happened about a year ago when I found a wallet on the street near my school.

I was walking home when I saw a black leather wallet lying on the pavement. Out of curiosity, I picked it up and checked inside. It had a lot of cash, an ID card, and some bank cards. At that moment, I had two choices: I could keep the money, or I could try to find the owner. Even though I was tempted for a second, I knew that the right thing to do was to return it.

Luckily, the ID card had the owner’s name and address, so I decided to bring it to the nearest police station. A few days later, I received a call from the owner, who was incredibly grateful. He even offered me a small reward, but I politely declined.

This experience made me feel really proud of myself. It reinforced my belief that honesty always leads to positive outcomes. I also realized how important it is to treat others the way I would want to be treated. If I had lost my wallet, I would have desperately hoped for someone to return it.

    IELTS Speaking part 3

    1. Do you think it is always important to tell the truth?

While honesty is undeniably a fundamental virtue, I wouldn’t say it’s always necessary to be completely truthful. In some cases, a white lie can be more beneficial than brutal honesty. For example, if telling the truth would cause unnecessary distress, such as revealing a harsh reality to someone who is emotionally vulnerable, a more diplomatic approach might be preferable. That being said, in professional and ethical contexts, honesty remains paramount.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Undeniably /ˌʌn.dɪˈnaɪ.ə.bli/ – không thể phủ nhận
    • Fundamental virtue /ˌfʌn.dəˈmen.təl ˈvɜː.tʃuː/ – phẩm chất quan trọng
    • White lie /waɪt laɪ/ – lời nói dối vô hại
    • Brutal honesty /ˈbruː.təl ˈɒn.ə.sti/ – sự thật trần trụi
    • Diplomatic approach /ˌdɪp.ləˈmæt.ɪk əˈprəʊtʃ/ – cách tiếp cận khéo léo
    • Paramount /ˈpær.ə.maʊnt/ – quan trọng nhất

    2. In what situations do people sometimes lie instead of telling the truth?

There are various scenarios where people resort to lying, either to protect others or themselves. For instance, individuals often sugarcoat bad news to avoid causing emotional harm. Another common reason is self-preservation—people may lie to avoid punishment or embarrassment. Beyond that, some may even fabricate stories to gain social approval, especially in the era of social media where image-building is crucial.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Resort to (sth) /rɪˈzɔːrt tu/ – viện đến, dùng đến
    • Sugarcoat /ˈʃʊɡ.ə.kəʊt/ – làm nhẹ đi, nói giảm nói tránh
    • Self-preservation /ˌself.prez.əˈveɪ.ʃən/ – tự bảo vệ bản thân
    • Fabricate stories /ˈfæb.rɪ.keɪt ˈstɔː.riz/ – bịa chuyện
    • Social approval /ˈsəʊ.ʃəl əˈpruː.vəl/ – sự chấp nhận của xã hội

    3. Do you think honesty is an important quality for employees? Why?

Without a doubt, honesty is a cornerstone of professionalism. An honest employee fosters trust and transparency in the workplace, which are essential for effective teamwork. Moreover, integrity in employees ensures that ethical standards are upheld, preventing issues like fraud and misconduct. However, honesty should be coupled with tact and discretion because being overly blunt can sometimes be counterproductive in a professional setting.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Cornerstone /ˈkɔː.nə.stəʊn/ – nền tảng quan trọng
    • Trust and transparency /trʌst ænd trænsˈpær.ən.si/ – sự tin tưởng và minh bạch
    • Ethical standards /ˈeθ.ɪ.kəl ˈstæn.dərdz/ – tiêu chuẩn đạo đức
    • Fraud and misconduct /frɔːd ænd ˌmɪsˈkʌn.dʌkt/ – gian lận và hành vi sai trái
    • Tact and discretion /tækt ænd dɪˈskreʃ.ən/ – sự khéo léo và thận trọng

    4. How can schools teach children the value of honesty?

Schools can instill honesty in children through moral education programs and real-life applications. For instance, teachers can use storytelling to highlight the consequences of dishonesty. Additionally, role-playing activities can help students understand the importance of truthfulness in social interactions. Beyond that, fostering an environment where mistakes are treated as learning experiences rather than punishable offenses encourages students to be honest without fear of repercussions.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Instill /ɪnˈstɪl/ – truyền dẫn (giá trị, phẩm chất)
    • Moral education programs /ˈmɒr.əl ˌedʒ.ʊˈkeɪ.ʃən ˈprəʊ.ɡræmz/ – chương trình giáo dục đạo đức
    • Role-playing activities /rəʊl ˈpleɪ.ɪŋ ækˈtɪv.ɪ.tiz/ – hoạt động đóng vai

    • Repercussions /ˌriː.pəˈkʌʃ.ənz/ – hậu quả

    5. What are the effects of dishonesty in society?

Dishonesty can have far-reaching consequences, eroding social trust and leading to widespread skepticism. For example, in business, deceptive practices can damage a company’s reputation and cause financial losses. On a larger scale, corruption and misinformation can destabilize societies and fuel political unrest. Ultimately, when dishonesty becomes normalized, it weakens the moral fabric of a community.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Far-reaching consequences /ˌfɑːrˈriː.tʃɪŋ ˈkɒn.sɪ.kwəns.ɪz/ – hậu quả sâu rộng

    • Moral fabric /ˈmɒr.əl ˈfæb.rɪk/ – nền tảng đạo đức

    6. Do you think technology makes it easier or harder for people to be honest?

Technology is a double-edged sword when it comes to honesty. On the one hand, digital communication promotes transparency, as information is easily verifiable. For example, fact-checking tools can expose misinformation instantly. On the other hand, anonymity on the internet enables deception, making it easier for people to fabricate identities or spread false information. All in all, whether technology enhances or undermines honesty depends on how it is used.

    Từ vựng hữu ích:

    • Double-edged sword /ˌdʌb.əlˈedʒd sɔːrd/ – con dao hai lưỡi
    • Verifiable /ˈver.ɪ.faɪ.ə.bəl/ – có thể xác minh
    • Expose misinformation /ɪkˈspəʊz ˌmɪs.ɪn.fɔːˈmeɪ.ʃən/ – vạch trần thông tin sai lệch

    • Undermine honesty /ˌʌn.dəˈmaɪn ˈɒn.ə.sti/ – làm suy giảm tính trung thực
