I’m going to talk about the first time I had the opportunity to savor authentic Japanese sushi. Sushi is a globally renowned dish that features delicately seasoned vinegared rice, often paired with exquisitely fresh raw fish, seaweed, and various accompaniments. While I had seen sushi in movies and on social media countless times, I had never actually tasted the real thing.

This experience took place last year, when my family dined at a highly-rated Japanese restaurant in Hanoi to celebrate my cousin’s birthday. Since she’s an avid fan of Japanese cuisine, she persuaded us to break away from our usual Vietnamese eateries and opt for something more adventurous. Initially, I was slightly apprehensive, as the idea of consuming raw fish seemed a bit daunting, but I decided to keep an open mind.

I went with my parents, my cousin, and some of her close friends, and we ordered an assortment of sushi rolls and sashimi platters. The presentation was absolutely stunning—each piece was meticulously arranged on a handcrafted wooden tray, resembling a work of art. When I took my first bite of fresh salmon nigiri, I was completely taken aback by how silky and buttery the fish tasted. The combination of flavors—the mild sweetness of the rice, the umami richness of the fish, and the subtle saltiness of the soy sauce—was simply divine.

That meal turned out to be a game-changing culinary experience for me. It shattered my preconceptions about raw seafood and deepened my appreciation for Japanese gastronomy. Ever since that day, sushi has become one of my go-to comfort foods, and I now jump at any chance to explore different variations of it.

I’d like to describe a memorable experience of trying genuine Italian pizza for the first time. Although I had eaten commercial fast-food pizza before, I had never tasted an authentic, wood-fired Italian-style pizza—the kind that stays true to its centuries-old culinary heritage.

This happened about two years ago, when my best friend and I visited a quaint Italian trattoria in Ho Chi Minh City. The restaurant was owned by an Italian chef who had spent decades perfecting his craft, so we had high expectations. After browsing through the menu, we opted for a classic Margherita pizza, which is considered the gold standard of Italian pizzas due to its simple yet perfectly balanced flavors.

When the pizza arrived at our table, I was immediately struck by how different it looked from the pizzas I was accustomed to. The crust was thin, slightly charred, and had an irresistible aroma, while the toppings consisted of vibrant tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella, and freshly torn basil leaves. My first bite was nothing short of a revelation—the flavors were incredibly fresh, and the crust had the perfect crispy-yet-chewy texture. Unlike the greasy, processed pizzas I had eaten before, this one was light yet deeply satisfying.

That meal left a lasting impression on me, as it made me realize just how much difference authenticity and high-quality ingredients can make in a dish. It also sparked my curiosity about global cuisines, and since then, I’ve made it a personal goal to explore as many traditional dishes from different cultures as possible.
