Multiple choice là dạng bài chọn đáp án chính xác trong nhiều đáp án cho sẵn. Đây là một trong những dạng phổ biến nhất trong bài thi IELTS Listening, xuất hiện trong hầu hết các kỳ thi và có thể gặp trong tất cả các phần. I. Tìm hiểu dạng bài Multiple Choice

Dạng bài Multiple choice yêu cầu chọn đáp án chính xác để hoàn thành câu hoặc trả lời câu hỏi. Với dạng thứ hai, đề bài có thể yêu cầu chọn nhiều hơn một đáp án, vì vậy trước khi nghe, bạn cần chú ý đọc và kiểm tra kỹ yêu cầu của đề bài. Đôi khi, đề bài có thể yêu cầu chọn đáp án đúng để điền vào bảng hay biểu đồ.

1. Dạng chọn đáp án để hoàn thành câu

Đây là dạng lựa chọn một đáp án chính xác trong các đáp án cho trước để hoàn thành câu.

Choose the correct letter, A, B or C.
Dr Peter Lyons has recently been best known for his
A publications about islands.
B dissertation on tropical plants.
C extensive studies of rock categorisations.

2. Dạng chọn đáp án trả lời câu hỏi

Đây là dạng lựa chọn đáp án phù hợp với câu hỏi. Trong trường hợp có nhiều đáp án chính xác, bạn có thể sẽ phải chọn 2-3 đáp án trong số 5-7 đáp án cho trước.

1. Choose the correct letter, A, B or C.

B training
C an offshore dive

2. Choose TWO letters, A-E.

Which TWO topics does Michael want to include in his presentation?

II. Chiến lược làm bài dạng Muiltiple choice

1. Bước 1: Đọc kỹ yêu cầu và tìm từ/cụm từ khóa của đề bài

Đây là thời gian phân tích đề:

Dạng bài Multiple choice có thể yêu cầu chọn nhiều hơn một đáp án, vì vậy bạn cần kiểm tra kỹ số lượng đáp án mà đề yêu cầu.
Bạn cần đọc và tìm ra từ/cụm từ khóa của đề. Ngoài ra, bạn cũng nên đọc hiểu các đáp án trước khi nghe.

Ví dụ: Choose the correct letter, A, B or C.
Dr Peter Lyons has recently been best known for his
A publications about islands.
B dissertation on tropical plants.
C extensive studies of rock categorisations.

1) Đề bài yêu cầu lựa chọn một đáp án trong A, B và C.

2) Sau khi đọc đề ta thấy rằng từ khóa của bài là Dr Peter Lyons. Sau đó tiếp tục đọc để hiểu nộI dung chính của từng đáp án như: ấn phẩm (publications), luận văn (dissertation), nghiên cứu (studies)

2. Bước 2: Lắng nghe các thông tin liên quan tới từ/cụm từ khóa

Ở bước này, bạn cần nghe kỹ các thông tin liên quan tới từ/cụm từ khóa và tìm các gợi ý trả lời.

M: Hello, Helen. Please have a seat. Can I help you with something?
W: Yes, well, I’m working on my research paper for my ecology class. But I’ve run into a bit of trouble.
M: I see. What seems to be the problem, exactly?
W: I can’t find sufficient research about my topic – island formation.
M: Well, have you looked up any research from Dr Peter Lyons? He’s an authority on island formations and is well- known for his books on tropical islands too.
W: I’ve read his dissertation on rock categorisations, and I thought that was the field where he had the most expertise. M: No, that was in his early years as a researcher, recently
he’s focused far more on islands.
W: I see, I’ll definitely look him up in the university library then.

Tips làm bài:

Dạng bài Multiple choice có thể yêu cầu lựa chọn đáp án miêu tả hành động tiếp theo của người nói. Dạng này chủ yếu xuất hiện cuối cùng, vì vậy bạn cần chú ý lắng nghe phần cuối của đoạn hội thoại để tìm các từ khóa thể hiện thì tương lai như: “will” hay “be going to” và các trạng từ chỉ thời gian như: “now”, “next”, “after”, “before”.
Với dạng bài Multiple choice, bạn cũng có thể phải nghe toàn bộ nội dung và lựa chọn nhiều hơn một đáp án. Khi đó, bạn cần nghe kỹ các thông tin liên quan và tìm ra gợi ý trả lời. Lưu ý rằng các thông tin này có thể được nhắc tới theo cách giống hoặc khác với các đáp án trong đề (paraphrasing).

3. Bước 3: Lựa chọn đáp án đúng.

Lựa chọn đáp án thể hiện đúng nội dung mà bạn nghe được (đáp án có thể được diễn đạt theo cách khác so với nội dung nghe). Sau khi lựa chọn, bạn cần kiểm tra tính chính xác của đáp án.

Ví dụ: Choose the correct letter, A, B or C.
Dr Peter Lyons has recently been best known for his
A publications about islands.
B dissertation on tropical plants.
C extensive studies of rock categorisations.

* Đoạn hội thoại đưa ra các gợi ý như ‘He’s well-known for his books on tropical islands too.’ (Ông ấy còn được biết đến bởi các cuốn sách về những hòn đảo nhiệt đới) và ‘Recently, he’s focused far more on islands’ (Gần đây, ông ấy quan tâm nhiều hơn đến các hòn đảo). Vì thực chất ‘his books on tropical islands’ có cùng ý nghĩa với ‘publications about islands’ (các ấn phẩm về những hòn đảo), nên A là đáp án chính xác.

Chúng ta cùng kiểm tra đáp án nhé:

Đáp án B có tới hai từ liên quan là ‘dissertation’ và ‘tropical’, tuy nhiên đáp án này thực chất là về thực vật nhiệt đới. Vì thế, B là đáp án sai.
Đoạn hội thoại tuy có đề cập tới: ‘I’ve read his dissertation on rock categorisations ~ I thought that was the field where he had the most expertise’ (Tôi đã đọc bài luận của ông ấy về phân loại đá, nên tôi nghĩ rằng đó là chuyên ngành của ông ấy), nhưng câu tiếp theo ‘No, that was in his early years as a researcher’ (Không phải, đó là bài viết trong những năm đầu sự nghiệp nghiên cứu của ông ấy) đã phủ định nội dung trên. Vì thế, C là đáp án sai.

Tips làm bài: Trong trường hợp phải chọn nhiều hơn một đáp án, bạn cần lưu ý mỗi đáp án chỉ được sử dụng để trả lời cho một câu hỏi và khi điền vào phiếu trả lời, chỉ tô duy nhất một đáp án cho mỗi câu. Nếu tô nhiều hơn một, những câu đó sẽ bị coi là không chính xác.
