Quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past Continuous Tense) diễn tả những hành động, sự việc kéo dài tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ và không còn tiếp diễn ở hiện tại.

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được sử dụng trong những trường hợp sau đây:
Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn bao gồm:
Cấu trúc: Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được hình thành bằng cách dùng cấu trúc "was/were + V-ing" (ví dụ: was playing, were eating) để diễn tả hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ.
Thời điểm xảy ra: Thì này thường được sử dụng để nói về một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ vào một thời điểm nhất định hoặc trong một khoảng thời gian. Hành động phụ thuộc vào thời điểm khác trong quá khứ:
Past Continuous thường đi kèm với một hành động khác (thường là thì quá khứ đơn) để diễn tả sự liên tục, đồng thời xảy ra của hai hành động trong quá khứ.
Có các từ khóa: while, when, as, at, during, before, after, etc.
Có hai hành động xảy ra đồng thời:
Ví dụ: I was watching TV while my sister was reading a book. (Tôi đang xem TV trong khi em gái tôi đang đọc sách.)
Ví dụ: I was cooking dinner when the doorbell rang. (Tôi đang nấu bữa tối thì chuông cửa reo.)
