    3. Sample answer

One positive change I made in my life was starting to exercise regularly and adopting a healthier lifestyle overall. This change involved committing to a routine of jogging and strength training, which I now do several times a week. Before, I didn’t focus much on my health, but I realized I needed to make a change for the better.

I decided to make this change because I wanted to improve both my physical health and my mental well-being. I was feeling low on energy and often found it difficult to concentrate, so I thought that regular exercise could help with that. Also, one of my friends had recently started working out and shared how much better they felt, which really motivated me to give it a try.

I started this journey with that same friend, and we quickly became workout partners. Having someone to exercise with has been a huge help because we can motivate each other and hold each other accountable. We usually go jogging together and sometimes try out different exercises to keep things interesting.

Since making this change, I feel so much better. Not only do I have more energy throughout the day, but my mood has also improved, and I find it easier to focus on my studies and other activities. I feel proud of myself for making a positive change that has improved my life in so many ways, and it encourages me to keep up this healthy habit.

    IELTS Speaking part 3

1 Is it easier for young people to change?

To my way of thinking, young people generally find it easier to adapt to change. For starters, they are often more open-minded and flexible, which allows them to embrace new ideas or experiences without much hesitation. Another thing is that younger generations tend to have fewer responsibilities compared to older people, which makes it easier for them to try out new things or make changes in their lifestyle. What’s more, young people are usually more familiar with modern technology and trends, which can help them adapt to changes in a fast-paced world. That said, it doesn’t mean older people can’t change, but in general, youth have fewer obstacles to overcome when it comes to change.

    • adapt (v) /əˈdæpt/: thích nghi
    • flexible (adj) /ˈflek.sə.bəl/: linh hoạt
    • embrace (v) /ɪmˈbreɪs/: đón nhận
    • hesitation (n) /ˌhez.ɪˈteɪ.ʃən/: sự do dự
    • responsibility (n) /rɪˌspɒn.sɪˈbɪl.ə.ti/: trách nhiệm
    • fast-paced (adj) /ˌfɑːstˈpeɪst/: nhịp độ nhanh
    • obstacle (n) /ˈɒb.stə.kəl/: trở ngại

2 Is it easy for old people to change?

I’d say that change can be more challenging for older people, but it really depends on the individual. For starters, older adults may have more established routines and habits, making it harder for them to adapt to something completely new. Another factor is that with age, there might be a reluctance to change due to comfort or fear of the unknown. That said, I believe older people can change if they are motivated and given proper support. For example, they can learn to use new technology or change their lifestyle if they see the benefits, like improving their health. What I reckon is that the key is having the right mindset and encouragement from others.

    • established (adj) /ɪˈstæb.lɪʃt/: đã hình thành, cố định
    • routine (n) /ruːˈtiːn/: thói quen hằng ngày
    • reluctance (n) /rɪˈlʌk.təns/: sự miễn cưỡng
    • motivate (v) /ˈməʊ.tɪ.veɪt/: tạo động lực
    • proper (adj) /ˈprɒp.ər/: phù hợp
    • support (n) /səˈpɔːt/: sự hỗ trợ
    • mindset (n) /ˈmaɪnd.set/: tư duy, cách suy nghĩ

3 How can people change their daily routine if they want to?

If people want to change their daily routine, the first step is usually setting clear goals. To start with, they need to figure out what they want to change and why. For example, someone might want to wake up earlier to have more time for exercise. Another important step is to start small; making drastic changes all at once can be overwhelming. For starters, they can adjust one thing at a time, like setting a new bedtime or reducing screen time in the evening. What’s more, tracking progress and staying motivated is crucial, so setting reminders or rewarding themselves for sticking to the new routine can be really helpful. To share one example, someone could gradually cut down on junk food and replace it with healthier options over a few weeks.

    • goal (n) /ɡəʊl/: mục tiêu
    • drastic (adj) /ˈdræs.tɪk/: mạnh mẽ, quyết liệt
    • overwhelming (adj) /ˌəʊ.vəˈwel.mɪŋ/: áp đảo, quá tải
    • adjust (v) /əˈdʒʌst/: điều chỉnh
    • progress (n) /ˈprɒɡ.res/: tiến độ
    • motivate (v) /ˈməʊ.tɪ.veɪt/: tạo động lực
    • reward (v) /rɪˈwɔːd/: thưởng

4 What are the disadvantages when people keep making changes?

While change can be beneficial, there are also some disadvantages to constantly making changes. For starters, frequent changes can lead to instability and stress, as people may feel overwhelmed by the need to adapt to new circumstances all the time. Another thing is that constantly switching routines or plans can prevent people from achieving long-term goals, as they might get distracted or discouraged. That said, change is necessary for growth, but if it’s too frequent or not well thought out, it can hinder personal development rather than support it. To name one example, someone might constantly change their job, but never really settle into a career path, which could affect their long-term happiness and success.

    • instability (n) /ˌɪn.stəˈbɪl.ə.ti/: sự bất ổn
    • stress (n) /stres/: căng thẳng
    • long-term (adj) /ˌlɒŋˈtɜːm/: dài hạn
    • distracted (adj) /dɪˈstræk.tɪd/: bị phân tâm
    • discouraged (adj) /dɪˈskʌr.ɪdʒd/: nản lòng
    • hinder (v) /ˈhɪn.dər/: cản trở
    • personal development (n) /ˌpɜː.sən.əl dɪˈvel.əp.mənt/: sự phát triển cá nhân
