Nhìn chung, trong phần thi IELTS Speaking part 1, giám khảo sẽ hỏi bạn 1 trong 2 dạng câu hỏi chính như sau:

• Câu hỏi khái quát (dạng hỏi đáp) 
• Câu hỏi cụ thể (dạng yêu cầu trình bày quan điểm) 

 1. Câu hỏi khái quát

Các câu hỏi điển hình cho dạng khái quát này có thể kể đến:

• Do you like music? 
• Do you like watching TV programmes? 
• Do you like travelling? 
• Do you like swimming? 
• Do you like shopping? 
• Do you like collecting things? 
• Do you use computers? 
• Can you drive a car?

1.1. Music (Âm nhạc)

  • What: pop, techno (nhạc điện tử), hip hop, rock, classical, light music 
  • Where: Normally, I like to listen to music from my earphones when I take a ride on public transport. 
  • When: When I can't go to sleep, I like to listen to some light music to calm myself down.
  • Who: My most favourite singers are Adele, James Blunt, and Avril Lavigne. 
  • Why: 
    • I am fond of music mainly because it can cheer me up greatly when I feel down/low/ blue/bored/tired/ depressed(âm nhạc khiến tôi rất phấn khởi khi tôi thấy buồn chán mệt mỏi thất vọng...)

1.3. Dancing (Khiêu vũ)

1.8. Painting (Hội họa)

Do you like drawing/painting?

1.9. Collecting (sưu tầm)

    • help me acquire the knowledge of the world (stamps/coins/paper notes) - giúp tôi hiểu biết về thế giới 
    • broaden my horizon/widen my outlook - mở rộng tầm nhìn 
    • help me express personal sentiment (vampire/zombie DVDs) - giúp tôi biểu lộ tình cảm cá nhân 
    • show my fondness for gifts from friends or family members (dolls/toy cars/teddy bears) - cho thấy tôi thích những món quà mà bạn bè hoặc các thành viên trong gia đình trao tặng 
    • be a way of making profit - là một cách sinh lợi 

2. Câu hỏi cụ thể

Câu hỏi cụ thể là dạng câu hỏi đòi hỏi bạn đưa ra lựa chọn hoặc trả lời yes/ no rồi nêu lý do. Khi đặt câu hỏi cụ thể, giám khảo muốn kiểm tra xem: 

A. bạn đưa ra quan điểm có rõ ràng và xác đáng không (standpoint) 

B. bạn có thể nêu lý do vì sao mình có quan điểm đó không (reasoning) 

C. bạn có nêu ví dụ cụ thể không (concrete examples)

D. bạn có khả năng nêu giả định cho vấn đề không (supposition) 

E. bạn có đề cập mặt đối lập của vấn đề không (contrary aspect)

F. bạn có kết luận cho vấn đề không (conclusion) 
 

Bạn có thể triển khai nội dung bài nói theo các điểm trên. Đây là cách giúp bạn đạt điểm cao khi trả lời câu hỏi cụ thể của giám khảo. 

A. Đưa ra quan điểm: trình bày rõ quan điểm khi trả lời câu hỏi 

B. Nêu lý do: áp dụng nguyên tắc KISS (Keep It Simple and Straightforward) bằng cách dùng các từ hoặc cụm từ then chốt như: simply because/ mainly because/since ...

C. Nêu ví dụ: đưa ra các ví dụ từ trải nghiệm của bản thân hay của những người xung quanh, dùng các cụm từ như: By this, I mean/Take sth as an example/For instance ...

D. Nêu giả định: dùng các cấu trúc giả định như: Without ..., I couldn't .../ How could I ... If I chose ..., I would..., so... is much better... 

E. Đề cập mặt đối lập của vấn đề: dùng các cách diễn đạt thể hiện cách nhìn bao quát hơn như: However, I do realise that.../On the other hand, I have to say that ... 

F. Kết luận: tóm tắt quan điểm đã trình bày, dùng các cách diễn đạt như: In short/ All in all/In summary/To conclude/To sum up/In a word, that's why... 

Để hiểu rõ hơn cách trả lời, chúng ta sẽ cùng đi sâu vào một số ví dụ dưới đây:

2.1. Ví dụ 1 - Is your family important to you? 

• Đưa ra quan điểm: Definitely yes, my family means everything to me 
• Nêu lý do: simply because they gave me life, raised me up, and have supported almost every decision that I have ever made. 
• Nêu ví dụ: For example, I am about to study overseas, and my family will give me sufficient financial support, so I won't need to worry about my living expenses and tuition. 
• Nêu gỉa định: Without my family, I don't believe I could survive for more than three days. 
• Kết luận: So, without any doubt, my family is the most important thing in my life.

Lưu ý: Khi trả lời câu hỏi, trước tiên bạn phải đưa ra quan điểm (bước A). Với các bước còn lại, bạn không cần phải trình bày theo trình tự nói trên. Căn cứ vào nội dung câu hỏi, bạn có thể kết hợp các bước này theo trình tự khác nhau để tạo ra hiệu quả khác nhau. Điều quan trọng là bạn phải dùng từ cấp độ cao và đảm bảo tính logic trong câu trả lời (chẳng hạn phải nêu ví dụ sau khi giải thích). Và cuối cùng bạn phải đưa ra câu kết luận để kết thúc phần trình bày của mình. 

2.2. Ví dụ 2 - Are computers important to you?

• Đưa ra quan điểm: Yes, computers are extremely necessary in my daily life, just like eating and sleeping. 
• Nêu giả định: Without a computer, I wouldn't be able to get access to my online social networks, like Facebook/Twitter/Yahoo Messenger, and then I would lose connection with most of my friends and classmates. Without computers, it would be inconvenient for me to finish my assignments, prepare my class presentations, and do research online. Without computers, my life would be boring and monotonous simply because I am used to amusing myself by listening to music, watching films, and playing computer games on computers every day. 

Thậm chí bạn có thể đặt câu hỏi tu từ như: 

• Can you imagine life without computers? 
• Can you imagine birds flying without wings? 
• Can you imagine people living without air and water? 
• Kết luận: So, I may conclude that computers are essential to me.

2.3. Ví dụ 3 - Do you prefer eating at home or at restaurants? 

• Đưa ra quan điểm: Generally speaking, I am keener on eating at restaurants 
• Nêu lý do: simply because I can try a wider range/selection of food at restaurants. 
• Nêu ví dụ: For example, I can enjoy Japanese food, like sushi, sashimi, and udon noodles. 
• Đưa giả định: But if I eat at home, I probably can only have Vietnamese food since my mum has no idea of how to cook Japanese food. 
• Đề cập mặt đối lập: However, I do know that food safety is becoming increasingly alarming in Đề cập mặt Vietnam these days. So, somehow eating at home will be more hygienic and guaranteed. 
• Kết luận: In a word, I like eating at restaurants better. 

Điểm khó nhất khi trả lời loại câu hỏi này là bạn phải tìm ý thật nhanh và trình bày rõ ràng. Thật ra bạn chỉ cần nêu những ý đặc trưng nhất. Ví dụ: 

- Ăn ở nhà: inexpensive/hygienic/better family atmosphere/sharing moments/homemade

- Ăn ở nhà hàng: time-saving/labour-saving/a wider range of selections/more appropriate for business banquets 

2.4. Ví dụ 4 - Do you prefer swimming in the sea or in a swimming pool? 

• Đưa ra quan điểm: Personally speaking, I would rather swim in a swimming pool than in the sea 
• Nêu lý do: simply because swimming in a pool is much safer than swimming in the sea. 
• Nếu ví dụ và giả định: For example, if I swim in the sea, I may face great danger, say, coming across a shark. 
• Kết luận: So, I'd rather swim in a peaceful swimming pool. 

2.5. Ví dụ 5 - Do you like watching films at home or in the cinema?

• Đưa ra quan điểm: Mostly, I have a fancy for watching films at home 
• Nêu lý do: mainly because it is inexpensive, and besides, I could rewind and pause at any time. 
• Đề cập mặt đối lập: But I do know that watching films in the cinema may offer us better atmosphere and better audio-visual effects. 
• Kết luận: So, it depends on the situation. For some highly recommendable blockbusters, I like to watch them in the cinema. 

Dưới đây là một số gợi ý SOL dành cho bạn:

• Các lý do khiến bạn thích xem phim ở rạp: 
  • the thrill of watching films on a bigger screen - cảm giác lâng lâng khi xem phim màn ảnh rộng 
  • The atmosphere is more exciting - bầu không khí ở đó nhận nhịp hơn 
  • more deeply involved in the film - cuốn hút vào bộ phim 
  • l the only place to watch a premiere - nơi duy nhất được xem buổi chiếu công diễn 
• Các lý do khác khiến bạn thích xem phim ở nhà: 
  • cosier/homier/comfier - ấm cúng gần gũi thoải mái hơn 
  • switch it off or switch channels when you feel uninterested - tắt hoặc chuyển kênh khi không thích xem phim đó nữa 
  • share opinions and discuss with friends while watching - chia sẻ cảm nghĩ và bàn bạc cùng bạn bè trong lúc xem phim
