One time I lost a valuable item was about two years ago when I misplaced my smartphone during a busy day at university. It happened on a Friday afternoon when I was rushing to meet my friends after finishing a long day of classes.

My smartphone was relatively new at the time, and it cost around 15 million VND. It was the first expensive item I had saved up to buy, so it meant a lot to me. The phone had everything on it—my contacts, photos, and important notes for my studies.

I lost it somewhere between the campus library and the coffee shop where I was meeting my friends. I remember putting it in my backpack, but when I reached the coffee shop and tried to take it out, it was gone. I immediately panicked and retraced my steps, searching everywhere I had been, but I couldn’t find it. I even asked at the library and checked with the campus security, but no one had seen it.

The experience was really stressful and upsetting. I felt a mix of frustration and regret, especially since I realized I should have been more careful with something so valuable. What made it worse was the thought of losing all the personal data and memories stored on the phone. I felt really down for the rest of the day, and it took me a while to come to terms with the loss.

Looking back, the experience taught me to be more mindful of my belongings, especially in crowded places. It also made me realize the importance of backing up important data regularly. Although it was a tough lesson, I’ve become much more cautious since then.

    IELTS Speaking part 3

    1. What kind of things do people lose easily?

People often lose small, everyday items like keys, wallets, and phones. These things are usually carried around frequently, so it’s easy to misplace them. For example, you might put your keys in an unusual place and then forget where you left them. People also frequently lose items like sunglasses, remote controls, or even small pieces of jewelry. These items are often left in places where they blend in with their surroundings or are easily overlooked.

    • small, everyday items /smɔːl ˌɛvriˈdeɪ aɪtəmz/: các vật dụng nhỏ hàng ngày
    • misplace /mɪsˈpleɪs/: để nhầm chỗ
    • blend in /blɛnd ɪn/: hòa vào
    • easily overlooked /ˈiːzɪli ˌoʊvərˈlʊkt/: dễ bị bỏ qua

    2. Why do people keep losing things?

People often lose things because they are distracted or disorganized. In our busy lives, it's common to be multitasking, which makes it easier to forget where we put things. For instance, if you're rushing to leave the house and put your phone down while you’re grabbing your bag, you might forget where you left it. Additionally, if someone doesn't have a designated place for their belongings, it can lead to misplaced items. Stress or being in a hurry can also contribute to losing things frequently.

    • distracted /dɪˈstræktɪd/: bị phân tâm
    • disorganized /dɪsˈɔːrɡənaɪzd/: không gọn gàng
    • multitasking /ˌmʌltiˈtæskɪŋ/: làm nhiều việc cùng lúc
    • designated place /ˈdɛzɪɡneɪtɪd pleɪs/: nơi được chỉ định
    • contribute to /kənˈtrɪbjuːt tuː/: góp phần vào

    3. Where do people often find things they have lost?

People often find lost items in places where they first looked or in unexpected spots. For instance, a common place to find lost keys is in the pocket of a coat or bag that was used at the time they were misplaced. Sometimes, items are found in places where they were put down absentmindedly, like on a table or in the car. It’s also common to find things in unusual places, like inside the refrigerator or under a pile of papers, where they might have been accidentally placed.

    • unexpected spots /ˌʌnɪkˈspɛktɪd spɒts/: những nơi không ngờ tới
    • absentmindedly /ˌæbsəntˈmaɪndɪdli/: một cách đãng trí
    • accidentally placed /ˌæksɪˈdɛntəli pleɪst/: đặt nhầm chỗ

    4. Is it important to be organized for a good student?

Absolutely, being organized is crucial for a good student. Organization helps students manage their time effectively, keep track of assignments, and prepare for exams. For example, having a clear study schedule and a well-organized notebook can make it easier to stay on top of coursework. When students are organized, they can avoid last-minute cramming and reduce stress, which can lead to better academic performance. Additionally, good organization skills can help students develop a sense of responsibility and efficiency, which are valuable in both academic and personal life.

    • crucial /ˈkruːʃəl/: rất quan trọng
    • manage time effectively /ˈmænɪdʒ taɪm ɪˈfɛktɪvli/: quản lý thời gian hiệu quả

    • efficiency /ɪˈfɪʃənsi/: hiệu quả

    5. What should parents do to teacher their children not to lose things?

Parents can teach their children not to lose things by encouraging them to develop good habits and routines. For example, they can help their children establish a specific place to keep important items, like a dedicated spot for keys or school supplies. Teaching children to always put things back where they belong can also be helpful. Additionally, parents can use reminders or checklists to help children remember where they placed their belongings. It’s important for parents to model these behaviors themselves, as children often learn by observing their parents' actions.

    6. Are there any good ways to remind us not to forget or lose tings?

Yes, there are several effective methods to remind us not to forget or lose things. One useful strategy is to set reminders on our phones or use apps that help track items. For example, you can use a reminder app to alert you about important tasks or where you last put something. Another helpful technique is to use visual cues, like placing a bright sticker on important items or creating a checklist for daily essentials. Keeping a consistent routine and designating specific places for commonly used items can also reduce the chances of losing them.
