Describe a person who likes to make things by hand (e.g. toys, furniture).

    • What he/she makes

    2. Sample answer

I’d like to talk about my grandfather, who is really passionate about making things by hand. His name is Minh, and he’s in his late 70s now. He’s been retired for many years, but instead of just relaxing, he spends a lot of his time crafting different things, especially wooden toys and small pieces of furniture.

My grandfather mainly focuses on making traditional Vietnamese wooden toys like spinning tops, bamboo flutes, and small carvings. He also enjoys making simple, rustic furniture like stools, small tables, and shelves. He’s very detail-oriented, so everything he makes is not only functional but also beautifully crafted with intricate designs.

The reason why he loves making things by hand is that it reminds him of his childhood when people used to make their own toys and household items because they couldn’t afford to buy them. He often tells me stories about how, when he was a child, he would spend hours carving a piece of wood into a toy boat or making a kite from bamboo and paper. For him, creating things by hand is a way to connect with the past and preserve these traditional crafts.

Personally, I have a lot of admiration for my grandfather. I think it’s amazing that he has such a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and that he’s keeping these skills alive. Whenever I see him working in his little workshop, it inspires me to valuehandmade things and the effort that goes into creating them. I feel lucky to have someone in my life who not only values tradition but also has the skill and patience to create something meaningful with his hands.

Yes, I think traditional handicrafts are really important for tourism. When tourists visit a country, they often want to buy something unique that represents the culture, and handicrafts are perfect for that. For example, in Vietnam, things like handmade silk scarves or pottery from Bat Trang are very popular with tourists. These items are not just souvenirs; they carry the history and traditions of the country, which makes them special. Plus, tourists love to see how these items are made, so it’s also an experience for them, not just a purchase.

    2. What are the benefits for students to learn to make things by hand?

Learning to make things by hand has a lot of benefits for students. First of all, it’s a way to develop creativity and patience, because making something by hand takes time and careful attention to detail. It’s also a great break from studying, allowing us to do something more practical and relaxing. Additionally, when we create something ourselves, we feel a sense of achievement and pride, which can boost our confidence. It also helps us understand the value of hard work, because we see the effort that goes into making something.

    3. Why do many children like to make things by hand?

From my perspective, many children like to make things by hand because it’s fun and allows them to be creative. When they make something on their own, they feel proud of what they’ve created, even if it’s something simple like a paper plane or a drawing. It’s also a way for them to express their imagination, and they enjoy the hands-on activity more than just watching TV or playing games. Making things by hand can also be a social activity, where they can work with friends or show their work to others, which adds to the enjoyment.

    4. How important are traditional handicrafts to a country's industry?

Traditional handicrafts are quite important to a country’s industry, especially in terms of preserving cultural heritage and providing jobs. For example, in Vietnam, many people in rural areas rely on making traditional crafts for their livelihood. These crafts are also important for export and tourism, which helps bring money into the country. However, I think that while traditional handicrafts are important, they are just one part of a country’s industry, which also includes modern sectors like technology and manufacturing.

    • preserving cultural heritage /prɪˈzɜːvɪŋ ˈkʌltʃərəl ˈhɛrɪtɪdʒ/: bảo tồn di sản văn hóa

Yes, I think it’s reasonable to charge a high price for handmade things because they take a lot of time and effort to create. Each handmade item is unique, and the materials used are often of high quality. Plus, when you buy something handmade, you’re paying for the craftsmanship and the artist’s skill, not just the product itself. Compared to mass-produced items, handmade things have more value because they are often made with care and attention to detail. So, even though they might be more expensive, I think it’s worth it.

    • reasonable /ˈriːzənəbl/: hợp lý

    • craftsmanship /ˈkrɑːftsmənʃɪp/: tay nghề

    6. How does modern technology change the handicraft industry?

Modern technology has changed the handicraft industry in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, technology can help craftsmen create more detailed and precise designs, and it can also make the production process faster and more efficient. For example, laser cutting or 3D printing can be used to enhance traditional crafts. However, on the downside, technology might also lead to fewer people learning traditional skills, as machines can do some of the work that used to be done by hand. This could mean that some traditional methods might be lost over time if people don’t continue to practice them.

    • detailed and precise designs /ˈdiːteɪld ænd prɪˈsaɪs dɪˈzaɪnz/: thiết kế chi tiết và chính xác
