Câu tường thuật (reported speech) trong tiếng Anh là cách diễn đạt lại lời nói của người khác một cách gián tiếp, thường là sau khi người nói đã nói chuyện. Khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang câu tường thuật, thường sử dụng các động từ như "say", "tell", "ask", "explain", v.v. để bắt đầu câu tường thuật và thay đổi thì của động từ phù hợp với ngữ cảnh.

Dưới đây là bảng về 3 dạng câu tường thuật thường dùng nhất trong tiếng Anh:

Để chuyển câu trực tiếp sang câu tường thuật bạn cần thực hiện theo 4 bước sau:
Thông thường từ tường thuật được sử dụng trong trường hợp này là say, said (quá khứ của say, nghĩa là nói) và tell, told (quá khứ của tell, nghĩa là nói với ai đó).
Ví dụ: Tom told me … (Mệnh đề tường thuật)
She said … (Mệnh đề tường thuật)
Cách lùi thì từ câu trực tiếp sang câu tường thuật như sau:

Sau khi hoàn tất lùi thì, cần đổi đại từ nhân xưng, đại từ sở hữu và tính từ sở hữu, tân ngữ phù hợp với ngữ cảnh trong câu. Cách quy đổi như sau:

-> Câu tường thuật: She said that she had seen him that day.

Để chuyển câu hỏi từ câu trực tiếp sang câu tường thuật cũng sử dụng các từ giới thiệu như "asked", "wondered", "inquired", "wanted to know", ... tùy thuộc vào ngữ cảnh. Để tạo thành câu tường thuật câu hỏi, chúng ta cần lưu ý các điểm sau:
